Our Story

40 Knots Winery is more than a vineyard — it’s a journey shaped by land, sea, and a deep commitment to honest farming. Here’s how our story begins and evolves.

From Tugboat Captain to Island Vineyard

The land now known as 40 Knots first became a vineyard in 2007–2008, when grapes were planted on what was then a remote property overlooking the Salish Sea. The original owner, a retired tugboat captain, recognized the special potential of the site — where ocean breezes and glacial soils meet coastal sunshine.

By 2011, the winery was producing its first wines.

A New Chapter — Family, Farming & Passion (Since 2014)

In July 2014, the estate was purchased by husband-and-wife team Layne Robert Craig and Brenda Hetman-Craig.

Layne — with roots in prairie farming — and Brenda — skilled in business and management — arrived with a shared vision: to respect the land, craft clean, honest wines, and build a sustainable vineyard that reflects place, climate, and care.

Over time, they expanded the vineyard to 24 acres and committed to organic, biodynamic, and plant-based practices that nurture the soil, respect the environment, and elevate the quality of the grapes.

Terroir — Coastal Influence & Unique Vineyard Conditions

At 40 Knots, we’re proud to be a family-friendly winery with spaces for all ages to enjoy. Guided wine tastings are 19+ to ensure a relaxed, focused experience and to comply with provincial regulations. Children are welcome on the property but must be actively supervised by an adult at all times. Thank you for helping us create an enjoyable atmosphere for everyone.

Location & Climate

Situated on the Comox Peninsula, 40 Knots sits just above the Salish Sea — where the ocean moderates the climate and gives the vineyard a distinct coastal edge. The sea breezes and mild coastal climate extend the growing season and help preserve acidity and balance in the grapes.

Soils & Vineyard Practices

Our vines grow in glacially-till soils — a complex blend of marine-influenced sediments and gravelly moraines that provide drainage, minerality, and structure.

Recognizing the sensitivity and potential of this land, we farm sustainably: no synthetics, minimal intervention, and a holistic approach that treats the vineyard as an ecosystem. Geese, ducks, and companion plantings help manage pests and maintain biodiversity — a practice rooted in respect for nature and the long-term health of the land.

Our Philosophy — Clean, Ethical, Island-Crafted Wines

From day one, 40 Knots committed to “clean ethical wines.” That means every choice — from vineyard to bottle — prioritizes sustainability, purity, and integrity.

Our wines are small-batch, estate-grown, and crafted to reflect the place they come from. Minimal intervention, hands-off winemaking, and respect for natural processes let the vineyard speak — so each bottle becomes a true expression of coastal Comox.

Community & Stewardship — More Than a Vineyard

We believe a winery should give back. That means employing locally, supporting the community, and committing to sustainable business practices that honour the land, the people, and future generations.

In 2024, 40 Knots achieved distinguished sustainability certifications, joining a small group of global businesses recognized for balanced environmental, social, and economic stewardship.

Our goal isn’t simply to make wine — it’s to uphold a legacy of care, authenticity, and respect for the terroir and those who enjoy its fruits.
